A U.S. Congressional delegation emphasized the U.S. interest in free, fair and peaceful elections to Guyanese stakeholders on January 22. Led by Representative Albio Sires of New Jersey, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, the delegation – including Representative Gregory Meeks of New York and Representative Yvette Clark of New York – met with President Granger, Foreign Minister Cummings, Justice Claudette Singh of GECOM, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo and representatives from international organizations, civil society groups, and the private sector. The delegation underscored the need for a credible and transparent election process consistent with Guyana’s laws and international obligations. The visit reinforced U.S. commitment to support gains in democratic governance and citizen security during this transformational period of Guyana’s history.
